Ceramic coating questions, answered honestly

Straight answers to the questions we hear most — about the coating itself, what it costs, how it is applied, how to maintain it, our mobile service, and getting to our Hythe Quay studio. If your question is not here, ask us directly — we would rather answer it than have you guess.

The coating itself

The first group of answers covers what ceramic coating is, what it does, and — just as important — what it does not do. For the full picture, read the ceramic coating guide.

Cost, booking and warranty

On pricing: we quote every car individually because paint condition, size and preparation all change the figure. Our prices page explains what moves the price, and our packages explain what differs between levels of work.

The process and maintenance

How the coating is applied, the cure schedule, and how to wash the car afterwards so the coating keeps performing. Our paint correction page covers the preparation step in detail.

Mobile service and visiting the studio

We coat at our Hythe Quay studio and as a mobile service across Colchester and parts of Essex. Mobile work needs a dry, sheltered space; if you are visiting the studio, call us on 07778 902278 beforehand and we will advise on parking and access.

All questions

What is ceramic coating?
A liquid polymer applied to your car's paintwork that cures into a hard, glass-like layer. It deepens gloss, makes washing easier and helps the paint resist UV, road salt and chemical staining.

Is ceramic coating worth it?
If you want deeper gloss, easier washing and long-term paint protection, yes. If you want scratch-proofing, no coating offers that — and if you enjoy waxing the car yourself every few months, you may not need one.

Does ceramic coating prevent scratches?
No. It adds minor resistance to light marring, but keys, grit and careless washing will still mark the paint. Anyone selling a coating as scratch-proof is not being straight with you.

How much does ceramic coating cost?
It varies with paint condition, vehicle size and preparation needed, so we quote every car individually with a firm written price. We publish no fixed prices. See our pricing page for what moves the figure.

How long does ceramic coating last?
It depends on the product, the preparation and how the car is maintained. Ask us for a straight answer for your car when you request a quote — including the warranty terms in writing.

Do I need paint correction before ceramic coating?
Usually for a used car, yes — coating locks in whatever is underneath, swirls included. New cars often need little or none. We inspect first and only recommend what the paint needs.

What is the coating process?
Wash and decontamination, paint inspection, machine polishing where needed, panel wipe-down, coating applied panel by panel, then a curing period. The preparation is most of the work; the coating is the final step.

How long do I have to wait before driving or washing the car?
Every product has its own cure schedule — we tell you exactly what to avoid and for how long before you collect the car. As a rule, keep it dry and avoid washing or chemicals during the initial cure.

How do I wash a ceramic coated car?
Hand wash with pH-neutral shampoo, two buckets or a foam pre-wash, a clean wash mitt and soft drying towels. Avoid automatic brush washes — they are the fastest way to undo good work.

Can I take a coated car through a car wash?
Touchless washes are acceptable in a pinch, but brush washes will introduce swirls into the coating just as they do into paint. Hand washing is what keeps the coating performing.

Can you wax over ceramic coating?
You can, but you rarely need to — the coating already gives the gloss and beading. Some owners add a spray sealant as a drying aid. Avoid abrasive polishes, which will wear the coating down.

What is better: ceramic coating or PPF?
They do different jobs. PPF is a physical film that stops stone chips; ceramic coating is a chemical layer giving gloss, easier washing and chemical resistance. Many cars benefit from both — film on the front, coating over everything.

Should I coat a brand new car?
Yes — it is the ideal time, because the paint needs little correction first. Tell the dealer not to wash or polish it before collection, and bring it to us as early as you can.

What about dealer paint protection?
It is typically a quick-apply sealant with a heavy mark-up, not a professional ceramic coating. Decline it and spend the money with a specialist instead.

Do you offer a mobile service?
Yes, across Colchester and parts of Essex. Mobile work needs a dry, sheltered space, and we never apply coatings in rain. Call us to check coverage for your postcode.

Is the mobile finish as good as the studio?
Yes, when conditions are right — same products, same process. Multi-stage paint correction usually happens at the studio because of the lighting and controlled environment.

What if it rains on the day of my mobile booking?
We reschedule. Coatings are never applied in the rain or on wet cars — we would rather move the appointment than compromise the finish.

Where is your studio?
Unit 3, Former Regent's Warehouse Site, King Edward Quay, Hythe Quay, Colchester, Essex, CO2 8JB. See our contact page for the map and directions.

Where do I park when I visit?
Call us on 07778 902278 before your visit and we will advise on parking and access for Hythe Quay — we are confirming the details and will talk you through it.

Do you coat wheels, glass and trim?
Yes — wheel, exterior glass and exterior trim coating can be added to a bodywork package or booked on its own. Mention it when you ask for a quote.

Do you offer a warranty?
Warranty terms depend on the package — ask us and we will put them in writing with your quote. We do not make warranty claims we cannot back up.

How do I book?
Call 07778 902278 or use the quote form with your car's make, model and year. We come back with a firm written price, no obligation.
