Paint protection film in Colchester

Paint protection film — PPF — is a transparent polyurethane film applied to your car's panels. Where ceramic coating is a chemical layer, PPF is a physical barrier: it absorbs stone chips, light scratches and road-rash that would otherwise mark the paint. If stone chips are your main worry, PPF on the front of the car is the honest answer — no coating can do what a film does.

Coverage options

Most PPF work is front-end coverage: bonnet, front bumper, front wings, mirrors and headlights — the panels that take stone chips on A-roads and motorways. Partial coverage like this is the sensible middle ground for most drivers.

Full-car coverage wraps the whole vehicle. It is the maximum protection available, and a correspondingly bigger job — more film, more time, more cost. It suits high-value cars, or cars you intend to keep for many years.

Which you need depends on the car, how you drive and how long you plan to keep it. Tell us and we will advise — including telling you when PPF is overkill for your situation.

Honest guidance: which should you choose?

  • Stone chips on the motorway are your main worry → PPF on the front, possibly with ceramic coating over the top.
  • You want maximum gloss and easier washing everywhere → ceramic coating on the whole car.
  • You want both → PPF on the front panels, ceramic coating over everything including the film. This is the "do it once, do it properly" option.
  • Your paint is already swirled → paint correction comes first, whichever protection you choose. Film and coating both lock in what's underneath.

If a car is a short-term lease you will hand back in two years, think carefully before spending on either — the maths is different from a car you plan to keep.

PPF questions

What is paint protection film?
A transparent polyurethane film applied to painted panels. It is a physical barrier — it absorbs stone chips and light scratches that would otherwise mark the paint. Good films are self-healing: light marks disappear with warmth.

Is PPF better than ceramic coating?
Neither is better in the abstract — they do different jobs. PPF is a physical barrier against stone chips and scratches; ceramic coating is a chemical layer giving gloss, easier washing and resistance to UV and chemical staining. Many cars benefit from both.

Can you apply ceramic coating over PPF?
Yes. Ceramic coating bonds to the film just as it does to paint, adding gloss, water beading and easier washing on top of the film's physical protection. It is a common and sensible combination.

Which panels should get PPF?
The front of the car takes the punishment: bonnet, bumper, wings, mirrors and headlights. Full-car coverage is possible but a much bigger job. We advise based on how and where you drive.

Does PPF change how the car looks?
A well-installed film is effectively invisible — it follows the panel with wrapped edges where possible. Poor installation shows edges, bubbles and lifting. This is a job where the installer's skill is everything.

How do I maintain PPF?
Much like coated paint: regular hand washing with pH-neutral shampoo, no automatic brush washes, and prompt removal of bird droppings. A ceramic coating on top makes maintenance easier still.

Chips, gloss, or both?

Tell us about the car and how you use it, and we will recommend PPF, ceramic coating, or the combination — honestly.
